What to Expect in Couples Therapy

It's normal to feel nervous

Couples who run into difficulties wait, on average, seven years before seeing a therapist. It's natural to hope problems will resolve on their own, and natural to feel a little apprehension about starting. You're here now, and that's the hardest step done.

Your first session

We start with the practical stuff: a review of the consent form covering risks, benefits, confidentiality, fees, and cancellation policies. Clear boundaries, agreed together, so therapy happens in a safe and respectful space. Then your therapist asks what brought you in, meeting with both of you to understand:

  • How you each define the problem
  • What brought you together
  • The history of your relationship
  • When the difficulties began
  • What a good relationship looks like to each of you

Getting to know each partner

In the second and third sessions, your therapist may meet with each of you separately. This helps them understand your individual perspectives, family history, and personal goals, all without judgment. Anything sensitive you share is handled with care, and your therapist will talk with you about what stays private.

The process

Therapy follows your relationship, not a script. If conflict is the main issue, your therapist provides tools to de-escalate it. If emotional distance is the problem, the focus shifts to exploring what keeps you apart. Either way, the work is shaped around the two of you.

Quiet path through the forest

What about infidelity?

Infidelity itself is rarely the real reason couples divorce. More often, emotional distance, loneliness, or unresolved conflict set the stage for it. Many couples try to "put it behind them and move on," but that rarely heals the relationship fully. A couple willing to work through the damage can actually reach new levels of love, intimacy, and authenticity.

One last thought

Many clients worry their therapist will blame, shame, or judge them. That's not how modern couples therapy works. Your therapist holds deep respect for each partner's dignity and perspective, and you'll feel that from the first session.

Common questions

What if my partner doesn't want to come?

That's more common than you'd think, and it doesn't mean couples therapy is off the table. We recommend that you start on your own so you can talk through how to raise it with your partner. If your partner does decide to join you, then you would both transition together to a couples therapist.

Does insurance cover couples therapy?

Many extended health plans cover counselling with a registered clinical counsellor. Reception can help you check your coverage before your first session.

How quickly can we get started?

Usually within a week or two, depending on therapist availability and your schedule. Fill out the form and reception will match you with a therapist who fits.

Is online couples therapy actually effective?

Yes. Research consistently shows online therapy is as effective as in-person for most concerns, and many couples actually prefer it. No commuting, no waiting room, and you can do it from the couch you share.
